1: Thame Town Carnival 2011
This year’s theme for the fantastic Thame Town Carnival is the Mardi Gras, and promises to be a festival of colour and a great celebration for the towns residents and visitors.

The history of Mardi Gras began when ancient Romans celebrated the “Lupercalia”, a circus like festival of abandon and merriment that preceded the penance of Lent. Traditional masks and costumes were worn as the people abandoned social conventions for the festival of “fat tuesday”, referring to the practice of the last night of dancing and eating richer foods. We like the sound of that!

The Mardi Gras promises to wow with fantastic costumes and performances in the procession with schools, residents and businesses dressing up and parading through the town centre from midday to end up at the Southern Road Recreation Ground.

The recreation ground will be alive with music and colour, with the fete running from 1pm – 4pm offering gourmet treats and tantalising tastes, among many other attractions.

For more information or to if you would like to get involved, email: thamecarnival2011@gmail.com. If you would like to get your club, organisation or business involved in Thame’s Mardi Gras, can be obtained from Town Councillor Nicola Dixon, via the town hall.
